Teaching Certification is NOT REQUIRED for the Try Teaching program. But, if Try Teaching participants decide to switch careers and become a teacher, teaching certification is required in order to teach in public schools in Kentucky.

Teaching certification rules and regulations are determined by a state agency within each of the fifty states; the Education Professional Standards Board is this agency in the state of Kentucky. EPSB is the standards and accreditation agency for Kentucky teachers and administrators and for programs of education at Kentucky colleges and universities.

Teacher certification programs generally include the following elements:

1. Coursework in the content area for certification (math, science, English, social studies, physical education, etc.)
2. Coursework in education/pedagogy.
3. The recommendation of the college/university at which the applicant completed the required teacher education coursework.
4. Passing scores on standardized examinations as set by the state. The state of Kentucky requires applicants for certification to pass PRAXIS II pedagogy and content exams.

The majority of teachers complete these requirements as a part of an undergraduate degree. But in recent years, states have created "alternative" routes to teacher certification. Most colleges and universities in Kentucky offer "alternative" certification programs. For example, Eastern Kentucky University offers the Masters of Arts in Teaching program.
